As we welcome Spring we enter into the month of April to commemorate National Pest Management Month. The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) felt it appropriate and necessary to honor the professionals who get down and dirty in homes and commercial establishments to ensure the safety and health for those on these properties.
Pests are not only a nuisance in and around a home or commercial establishment, but they also pose a lot of health risks for individuals. The NPMA also wants to take this month to increase awareness of the health issues that can arise with the increased presence of pests.
A Lack of Preventative Pest Control May Cause Adverse Health Effects
Believe it or not there are ticks in Arizona. Ticks feed on the blood of their hosts. They often latch on to animals and if they find their way onto a human, they can transmit whatever disease their host may have had to the human. Different ticks transmit different diseases. Common in the northern parts of Arizona is the Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF), which can be transmitted by the brown dog tick, which is more commonly found on dogs. Those in contact with dogs are at more risk of being bitten by a tick thus posing a risk for RMSF. Now, contracting a disease from a tick in Arizona is rare, but can be serious. Eco friendly pest prevention for your pet and home is highly recommended.
Mosquitos are another disease-carrying nuisance that is prevalent in Arizona. The species that causes the biggest threat to humans, if bit, is more active at dawn and at dusk. They breed around areas of standing water such as ponds, puddles and even horse troughs. They can carry the West Nile disease and the St. Louis encephalitis virus. Between March and October is when this insect is most active.
Bees and Wasps in Arizona can cause harm to humans if they are provoked. A swarm of these stingers can be very aggressive. It is advised to call a professional bee exterminator to safely rid your property of bees and wasps.
Cockroaches in Arizona are also widespread, especially this time of year with the weather getting warmer. Cockroaches head for the indoors to seek food and water. Due to a protein the cockroaches carry, this can trigger allergic reactions as well as asthma attacks in some individuals.
Pest Control Services Can Prevent the Decaying Health of a Building’s Structure
Termites, rodents and carpenter ants can cause a lot of expensive destruction to the structure of a home or building. It is quite common to not even suspect that your building may be a victim of internal ruin until it is too late when signs become more obvious.
These pests tend to burrow in the walls, attics and under the flooring. They can also chew through electrical wiring as well.
The NPMA Recommends the Following Tips to Help You Stay Proactive in Your Home Pest Prevention
Now is the time to take preventative measures to avoid falling prey to theses destructive and harmful pests.
First is to prevent any open access points where pests are prone to creep in. Seal all cracks in your foundation using a liquid concrete repair kit.
Review the exterior of the property for standing water or sources of moisture, hoses, drain pipes, or puddles. Also, start trimming branches away from the house. Make sure all trash containers are properly sealed as well.
Next, indoor housekeeping can also help to not attract pests from the outside in. This includes keeping food properly stored in cupboards and in the refrigerator, also keeping a tight lid on garbage cans that may contain food scraps. Disinfect counter surfaces from food debris and clean up after your pet’s feeding times.
Lastly, survey the windows and doors to see if there are any areas where repairs are needed such as, where there are gaps exposing to the outdoors.
